한국기자협회(회장 김경호)는 29일 모하메드 아흐마디네자드(Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) 이란 대통령 앞으로 서한을 보내 “이란 기자, 카림 아르간드푸우르(Karim Arghandepour)씨의 체포에 우려를 표하며 다른 기자들과 함께 즉각 석방하라”고 촉구했다.
기자협회는 이날 서울 이란대사관을 통해서 모하메드 아흐마디네자드 이란 대통령 앞으로 보낸 공식 서한에서 “국제기자연맹(IFJ)의 집행위 선출 맴버인 이란 기자 카림씨가 이란 대통령 선거에 따른 시위와 논쟁의 여파로, 워싱턴 타임즈의 그리스 제이슨 아다나시아디스(Jason Athanasiadis) 기자와 함께 최근 체포됐다”고 밝혔다.
이어 기자협회는 “이란 기자들이 무작위로 체포될 때, 의례 없이 인터넷 사이트가 차단되고 해외 언론과 국영 언론에 무거운 징계가 부과되는 것을 볼 때, 이 동료들을 염려한다”며 “우리는 이란 기자협회의 장인 알리 마즈루이(Ali Mazrooei)씨의 신변도 우려하고 있다”고 적었다.
그러면서 “이러한 상황은 이란 헌법에 명시된 인권과 언론 및 표현의 자유뿐만 아니라, 국제 사회의 기준과 노력에도 걸맞지 않다”며 “기자협회의 모든 회원을 대표해 이란 정부에 요구한다. 카림 기자와 다른 이란 기자들을 즉각 석방하라”고 주장했다.
또한 “현지 및 외국 언론에 부과된 모든 징계를 철회하고 헌법에 명시된 표현과 자유의 권리를 보호하기 위해 노력해 달라”고도 당부했다.

이는 최근 이란 저널리즘을 드리우고 있는 구름을 벗어내기 위한 단계입니다.

Re: Release of Karim Arghandepour
Your Excellency,
On behalf of Journalists’ Association of Korea, we write to express our deep concern about news of the arrest of Karim Arghandepour, a well-known Iranian journalist who is also an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) of which we are affiliate.
According to the Association of Iranian Journalists, Karim was arrested along with other journalists, including Jason (Lasson) Athanasiadis of Greece who was working for the Washington Times, in the wake of protests and controversy that have followed the recent presidential election.
We are also concerned for the safety of Ali Mazrooei, the Chair of the Association of Iranian journalists, who is currently in hiding for his own personal security. Like other journalists’ leaders he is fearful of being targeted by the authorities for his staunch defense of journalists and their right to work independently.
These colleagues are in our minds during these difficult days when we have witnessed targeting of media which has included the arbitrary arrest of Iranian journalists, heavy restrictions imposed on national and foreign media, and the unprecedented blocking of internet sites.
All of this is just cause for concern. These acts violate Iran’s commitments to international standards of human rights, press freedom and freedom of expression which are framed in the Iranian constitution.
On behalf of all members of Journalist’ Association of Korea we call on your government to act: to immediately release Karim Arghandepour and all other Iranian journalists; to lift the restrictions currently imposed on local and foreign media; and to restore confidence in Iran’s commitment to protection of the free expression rights as set out in the Constitution.
As a matter of urgency we ask you to guarantee the safety of Ali Mazrooei, Jason (Lasson) Athanasiadis and all Iranian journalists so that they can all return to work free of the threat of arrest and intimidation.
These steps are needed to lift the cloud currently hanging over Iranian journalism.
