IFJ Urges Somali Government to Guarantee Press Freedom, Safety of Journalists
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called on the Somali government and authorities in the self-declared autonomous regions to take strong measures to guarantee press freedom and safety of journalists after a four days roundtable of media workers and civil society groups in Mogadishu.
The participants in the roundtable discussion held 19-22 January declared that the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the authorities of Puntland and Somaliland “should support, defend and promote awareness of media freedom.” The safety of all journalists should be given the highest priority, they added.
“We welcome the holding of this important meeting and we commend the Transitional Government for sending its representatives to the meeting” said Gabriel Baglo, Director of the IFJ Africa Office. “During the last decades in Somalia too many journalists have been assaulted and killed, media houses frequently attacked making press freedom totally endangered.”
The IFJ called on the TFG and the authorities of Puntland and Somaliland to take strong measures to guarantee press freedom and the safety of journalists in Somalia.
The roundtable on “Promoting and safeguarding freedom of expression” in Mogadishu, which was organised by the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and sponsored by UNESCO gathered forty organisations of journalists and civil society groups from Somalia and the self-declared autonomous regions of Puntland and Somaliland. The organisations recommended the withdrawal of “all laws that violate freedom of expression.”
The participants of the roundtable created the Somali Forum for Freedom of Expression (SOFFE). NUSOJ was chosen to host the secretariat of the Forum.
The IFJ also urged the government to reopen Radio Warsan, which has been shut down since 7 January, 2007.

La FIJ invite le gouvernement somalien à garantir la liberté de la presse et la sécurité des journalistes
La Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (IFJ) a invité aujourd'hui le gouvernement Somalien et les autorités des régions autoproclamées autonomes à prendre d’importantes mesures pour garantir la liberté de a presse et la sécurité des journalistes après quatre jours de table ronde des travailleurs des médias et des groupes de la société civile à Mogadiscio.
Les participants aux discussions de la table ronde tenue du 19 au 22 janvier ont déclaré que le Gouvernement Fédéral de Transition (TFG) et les autorités de Puntland et de Somaliland « devraient soutenir, défendre et favoriser la conscience de la liberté des médias ». La sécurité de tous les journalistes devrait être la plus haute priorité, ont-ils ajouté.
« Nous nous félicitons de la tenue de cette importante réunion et nous saluons le Gouvernement de Transition d’y avoir envoyé ses représentants, » a dit Gabriel Baglo Directeur du Bureau Afrique de la FIJ. « Pendant les dernières décennies en Somalie trop de journalistes ont été agressés et tués, les organes de presse fréquemment attaqués mettant la liberté de la presse totalement en voie d’extinction. »
La FIJ a invité le TFG et les autorités de Puntland et de Somaliland à prendre d’importantes mesures afin de garantir la liberté de la presse et la sécurité des journalistes en Somalie.
La table ronde sur « promouvoir et sauvegarder la liberté d'expression » à Mogadiscio, qui a été organisée par le Syndicat national des journalistes somaliens (NUSOJ) et financé par l'UNESCO a rassemblé quarante organisations de journalistes et des groupes de la société civile de Somalie et des régions autoproclamées autonomes de Puntland et de Somaliland. Les organisations ont recommandé le retrait de « toutes les lois qui violent la liberté d'expression ».
Les participants de la table ronde ont créé le Forum somalien pour la liberté de l'expression (SOFFE). NUSOJ a été choisi pour accueillir le secrétariat du forum.
La FIJ a également invité le gouvernement à rouvrir Radio Warsan, qui est fermée depuis le 7 janvier 2007.
