IFJ Condemns Illegal Sacking of Seven Employees of Nation Media Group in Kenya
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today vehemently condemned the unlawful sacking of seven members of the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) from the Nation Media Group who lost their jobs because of their involvement in the union.
According to the KUJ, there has been a systematic pattern of harassment and intimidation targeting the KUJ leadership and its members that work for the Nation Media Group. The Group not only provides poor working conditions for journalists and media workers, but has also instituted a clause in the contract of its employees that bars them from joining a trade union.
“This is a flagrant violation of the fundamental human and labour rights of the employees as guaranteed by the Kenyan Constitution and the International Labour Organisation conventions which guarantee freedom of association,” said Gabriel Baglo, Director of the IFJ Africa Office. “The right to unionise guarantees peace and social justice, and it is the right of the employees of the Nation Media Group to join or form unions if they so wish” said Baglo.
The IFJ urges the Nation Media Group management and its owner, His Highness The Aga Khan, to ensure that the rights of its journalists and media workers in Kenya and in Africa in general are fully respected and guaranteed.
Harassment, intimidation and threats of dismissal aimed at the employees must cease immediately, the IFJ said. Management should place as its priority the improvement of the working conditions of its employees and ensure that a conducive environment is created that guarantees maximum efficiency in compliance with international Labour Standards.
In solidarity with the KUJ, the IFJ calls for the immediate reinstatement of all employees that were recently sacked unjustly and illegally by the Nation Media Group management. The IFJ says that the right to unionise is a fundamental human right and, therefore, management should revoke without delay all such clauses in the employees’ contracts that violate this basic right.

La FIJ condamne le licenciement illégal de 7 employés de Nation Media Group au Kenya
La Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (FIJ) a condamné aujourd'hui avec énergie le licenciement illégal de sept membres du Syndicat des journalistes du Kenya (KUJ) employés de Nation Media Group.
Selon le KUJ, il y a une manœuvre systématique de harcèlement et d’intimidation visant les dirigeants du syndicat et ses membres qui travaillent pour le groupe de presse Nation Media Group. Non seulement le groupe offre de mauvaises conditions de services aux journalistes et travailleurs des médias, mais il a aussi a institué une clause dans le contrat de ses employés qui leur interdit d’adhérer à un syndicat.
« C'est une violation flagrante des droits fondamentaux de l’homme et du travail des employés tel que garantis par la Constitution kenyane et les conventions de l’Organisation Internationale du Travail qui garantissent la liberté d'association, » a dit Gabriel Baglo, directeur du bureau Afrique de la FIJ. « Le droit de se syndiquer garanti la paix et la justice sociale, et c'est le droit social des employés de Nation Media Group, d’adhérer ou de constituer un syndicat si ils le souhaitent,» a dit Baglo.
La FIJ invite la direction de Nation Media Group et Son Altesse l'Aga Khan, propriétaire de l’entreprise, à s'assurer que les droits des journalistes et des travailleurs des médias de Nation Media Group au Kenya et en Afrique sont entièrement respectés et garantis.
Les harcèlements, l'intimidation et les menaces de renvoi envers les employés devraient cesser avec effet immédiat. La direction devrait se fixer comme priorité, l'amélioration des conditions de travail de ses employés et s'assurer qu'un environnement favorable est créé et qui garantit un maximum d’efficacité conformément aux normes de travail internationales.
En solidarité avec le KUJ, la FIJ appelle à la réintégration immédiate de tous les employés qui ont été récemment, injustement et illégalement renvoyés par la direction de Nation Media Group. Deuxièmement, la FIJ soutient que le droit de se syndiquer est un droit fondamental de l’homme et par conséquent, la direction devrait retirer, sans délai toutes les clauses pareilles dans les contrats des employés qui violent ce droit fondamental.
