Press Conference invitation

16 October 2006

Killing the Messenger:

Murder of Anna Politkovskaya and Crisis of Impunity over Media Deaths in Russia,

Belarus and Ukraine

Tuesday, October 17

11 am Malbeek Room, Residence Palace,

155 Rue de La Loi.

One of the world’s top investigative journalists and human rights reporters is gunned down in Moscow. She is the 13th leading journalist to be assassinated in the Putin era. In Ukraine, there is still no result, six years after the event, in the case of Gyorgy Gongadze who was brutally murdered while investigating corruption at the highest level. In Belarus, it is the second anniversary of the unpunished assassination of Veiranika Charkasava, an acclaimed reporter and symbol of media freedom.

In all these countries media suffer from the scourge of impunity. What is the European Union doing about these developments on its eastern borders? What more can be done to defend democracy? You are invited to discuss the crisis with Brussels-based journalists.
