Five of our colleagues in Mexico City were recently dismissed by the Associated Press as part of a plan by the company to void the collective bargaining contract it has had with the Mexican Journalists’ union Sindicato Nacional de Redactores de la Prensa (SNRP).
AP representatives have told the Mexican union that they are simply following a company-wide policy that seeks to end collective bargaining agreements in all offices and replace them with individual contracts.
In an effort to fight this union-busting policy and to get AP Chief Executive Thomas Curley to say publicly that he will respect labor union rights, we are planning a day of action on Friday, December 9. The day is being planned to tie in with International Human Rights Day, which is on Saturday, December 10.
The five unionized employees, who worked as editorial support staff in the bureau, must now find other jobs. The Mexican union is launching a legal challenge to this action in an effort to maintain the collective bargaining agreement in Mexico and ensure that any replacement workers will still be covered by the agreement.

RE: Respect workers’ rights and union rights at the Associated Press
Dear Mr. Curley,
I am writing to express my dismay over recent actions of the Associated Press that undermine the prospects for sound industrial relations in editorial departments. In particular, I am concerned at developments suggesting the Associated Press is seeking to eliminate agreements with unions representing editorial workers, calling into question the company’s commitment to respect the rights of workers to organise and to bargain collectively.
In co-ordination with other journalists’ unions around the world, I am asking you to make a clear and unequivocal statement that the Associated Press will not seek to terminate collective bargaining agreements it has with unions across the globe.
Your explicit assurance on this matter will allay fears that the Associated Press, one of the world’s leading news agencies, is intent upon a policy of anti-unionism that could damage the company’s reputation for fairness and respect for labour rights.
This request follows reports that Associated Press representatives in Mexico, where the five unionized staff members have been dismissed, have said they are implementing a global strategy to eliminate agreements with unions.
A company lawyer has told union officials in Mexico that Associated Press policy is now to end all contract agreements with unions around the world and to replace them with individual contracts that do not provide any labor protections.
As a union representative, I find this both provocative and counterproductive. Replacing union protection with personal contracts creates a precarious system of employment and lowers morale in the newsroom. The notion that the Associated Press plans to make such conditions a matter of operating policy comes as a shock to many within the industry.
My own union is deeply disturbed and I must inform you that we will do everything we can to fight this development, both in our own bureau and in a broader campaign of solidarity with fellow workers who resist this approach in other bureaux.
Tomorrow, December 10, is International Human Rights Day, a day when people all over the world are asked to recall the value of basic liberties and the right of everyone to live their lives in security and with dignity. It is an appropriate moment to ask you to ensure that your own employees are guaranteed their right to work according to international labour standards.
Respecting trade union rights and allowing Associated Press staff to work together in decent working conditions will guarantee a stable system of industrial relations and create an enabling environment for journalism of the highest quality.
I urge you to continue honoring the collective bargaining agreement that you have with the Mexican journalists’ union Sindicato Nacional de Redactores de la Prensa (SNRP) and make a fresh commitment to honor union rights in every country. I look forward to an immediate clarification of the company’s labour strategy in favour of respect for collective bargaining agreements and workers’ rights.

Contexto y modelo de carta de protesta para el 9 de diciembre de 2005
Estimados compa?eros, cinco de nuestros colegas en la Ciudad de M?xico fueron despedidos por Associated Press (AP), como parte de la estrategia que est? llevando a cabo esta agencia informativa para ignorar el contrato colectivo de trabajo que tiene firmado con el sindicato de periodistas mexicanos, llamado Sindicato Nacional de Redactores de la Prensa (SNRP).
Los representantes de AP en M?xico, dijeron al sindicato mexicano que s?lo se est?n apegando a la pol?tica internacional de la compa??a que busca terminar con los contratos colectivos en todas las oficinas y sustituirlos por relaciones individuales de trabajo.
Ante ello, la Federaci?n Internacional de Periodistas (FIP) ha planeando que el pr?ximo 9 de diciembre hagamos un d?a de acci?n de protestas en contra de AP. Se tiene previsto que esta fecha coincida con el D?a Internacional de los Derechos Humanos, que ser? el s?bado 10 de diciembre. Lo anterior, responde al esfuerzo de contrarrestar la pol?tica antisindicalista de AP y de hacer que su Director Ejecutivo, Tom?s Curley, exprese p?blicamente que esa agencia informativa respetar? las garant?as sindicales de trabajo.
Los cinco empleados sindicalizados, que formaban parte del equipo de apoyo editorial de Associated Press, ahora han quedado desempleados. El sindicato mexicano est? preparando las demandas jur?dicas correspondientes para mantener el contrato colectivo de trabajo en M?xico y asegurar que se respetar?, de acuerdo con el contrato, cualquier vacante que se ocupe.

Motivo: respeto a los derechos laborales de los trabajadores y del sindicato de AP en M?xico.
Estimado Se?or Curley:
Le escribo para expresarle mi consternaci?n acerca de los hechos recientes por parte de Associated Press (AP), que da?an las expectativas de las actividades laborales ?ptimas en los departamentos editoriales. En particular, me preocupa la postura de AP que busca deshacerse de contratos colectivos de trabajo con sindicatos que representan a trabajadores editoriales, poniendo en tela de juicio el compromiso de la compa??a para respetar los derechos de defensa y organizaci?n colectivos de los trabajadores.
En conjunto con otros sindicatos de periodistas de todo el mundo, le pido que declare, de manera inequ?voca y determinante, el hecho de que AP no est? buscando hacer caso omiso de los contratos colectivos celebrados con sindicatos alrededor del mundo.
La pronta respuesta a este respecto atenuar? los temores de que AP, una de las agencias noticiosas l?deres mundiales, pretende establecer una pol?tica antisindical que podr?a da?ar la imagen que mantiene AP de justicia y respeto por los derechos laborales.
Esta petici?n obedece a informes de representantes de AP en M?xico, donde se despidieron injustificadamente a cinco miembros sindicalizados, que manifestaron estar implementando una estrategia mundial que tiene el prop?sito de deshacerse de contratos con los sindicatos.
Un abogado de AP dijo a dirigentes sindicales en M?xico, que la pol?tica de AP est? a punto de terminar con todos los contratos colectivos con sindicatos alrededor del mundo y sustituirlos, as?, por contratos individuales que no impliquen protecciones laborales.
Como representante de un sindicato, lo anterior me parece provocativo y contra producente. El reemplazo de protecci?n sindical por contratos individuales genera un ambiente laboral precario que baja la moral en la sala de redacci?n. El hecho de saber queAP planea que tales condiciones se conviertan en una pol?tica de trabajo, resultar? en un impacto negativo para muchos del medio.
Mi propio sindicato est? bastante inquieto y me siento obligado a informarle que haremos todo lo posible para luchar contra esta situaci?n, tanto en nuestra propia oficina, como mediante una campa?a extensa de solidaridad con trabajadores y colegas, quienes se resisten a aceptar esta nueva pol?tica en otras oficinas.
Ma?ana ser? 10 de diciembre, D?a Internacional de Derechos Humanos, un d?a en el que se hace un llamado a toda la gente del mundo para que se replanteen el valor de la libertad y de las garant?as esenciales de cada ser humano para vivir con seguridad y dignidad. Ser? este un momento adecuado para pedirle que asegure a sus propios empleados las garant?as laborales de acuerdo con los est?ndares laborales internacionales.
El respeto a los derechos sindicales del gremio y el permitir que el equipo de AP trabaje en condiciones laborales decorosas, garantizar? un ambiente de seguridad de relaciones de trabajo y crear? una atm?sfera que permitir? la actividad period?stica de la mejor calidad.
Le exhorto a que contin?e respetando al acuerdo colectivo establecido con periodistas mexicanos, agremiados al Sindicato Nacional de Redactores de la Prensa, y renueve el compromiso de garantizar los derechos sindicales en cada pa?s. Estar? a la expectativa de una resoluci?n inmediata de la estrategia laboral por parte de AP que favorezca el respeto a contratos colectivos y los derechos de los trabajadores.
