The International Federation of Journalists intends to employ six media researchers - one based in each of three Asian countries (India, Cambodia, the Philippines) and one each in three of African countries (South Africa, Zambia and Nigeria) - to undertake research into media coverage of HIV/AIDS in their own country.
Tasks and responsibilities:
The Media Researcher India will work independently, but in close consultation with the IFJ Asia-Pacific regional office, following detailed guidelines provided by the IFJ's Asia-Pacific office, based in Sydney.
Under this direction, he or she will:
Undertake a two-week media-monitoring task in his or her own country. The Researcher will, in consultation with the IFJ Asia-Pacific regional office, select ten appropriate media outlets to monitor and will assess the quantity and quality of HIV/AIDS-related stories appearing in their sample.
Develop networks among journalists and HIV/AIDS NGOs within their country.
Manage the translation, distribution and collection of two surveys among a large number of journalists and HIV/AIDS NGOs within their country.
Compile data accumulated from the surveys and media-monitoring exercise.
Write and produce a major report describing and discussing the findings of the media-monitoring and survey tasks.
Have the report translated into English and submit the report to IFJ-Asia Pacific.
Assist with the preparation and planning of an Asia-Africa cross regional meeting on reporting HIV/AIDS, plus the organisation of various in-country workshops on reporting HIV/ AIDS and/or training techniques for delivery of workshops on reporting HIV/ AIDS.
Work within designated budgetary limits.
Be available to undertake media monitoring of ten news outlets from November 14 to 27, 2005. Be available to start work at the beginning of November, 2005.
Other IFJ work as required.
Conditions:
The position will be for a fixed term of five months (November 2005 - March 2006) with a pay in local currency equivalent to 300 Euros per month, dependent on meeting project milestones and deliverables.

Selection criteria
The person selected will have a demonstrated commitment to the principles of the IFJ, that is, to freedom of the press and to trade unionism.
Must have demonstrable skills in media monitoring and research.
Experience in reporting and/or researching media and/or HIV/AIDS will be highly regarded.
He or she will have the ability to work with others and on their own as required.
He or she will be able to follow directions and guidelines, and will pay close attention to detail.
Must have high-level communication skills (both written and spoken) in English and their local language. The ability to translate documents from English into their local language (and vice-versa) will be highly regarded. Abilities to communicate in other regional languages will be an advantage.
Must be highly organised, with strong planning, networking and reporting skills, and be able to work to a deadline.
