TV journalists attacked at political rally in Sri Lanka
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the global organisation representing more than 500,000 journalists in over 110 countries, has condemned the assault of two journalists during a political rally in Sri Lanka.
On September 6, Sudath Veherawatta and Kasun Sapumal Bandara of Sirasa TV were subject to fierce verbal and physical abuse outside the Sri Lanka Freedom Party's 54th Anniversary rally in Colombo.
"Attacks on journalists reporting political events are completely unacceptable and encroach on freedom of speech and press rights," said IFJ President Christopher Warren.
"Journalists must be free to report and comment on political events without fearing hostility or threats to their safety," said the IFJ President.
"In the interest of building a strong and vibrant democracy, the independent media must be able to provide rounded coverage of the political climate in Sri Lanka," said Warren.
According to IFJ sources, party supporters involved in the attack appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and may have come from Galle district for the rally.
The attack comes after several months of verbal threats to the Sirasa media organisation and other independent media organisations by government officials.
The two journalists have filed a complaint with the Borella police station.
"The IFJ calls on authorities to launch a proper investigation into the attack and take action against those responsible," said IFJ President Christopher Warren.
"Journalists rights must be taken seriously and protected with the full weight of the justice system, regardless of political interests or pressure," said the IFJ President.
