Released: September 7, 2005
The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) has flayed the targeting of journalists at a public protest rally in Kathmandu yesterday. It has taken strong note of the fact that one journalist, Bharat Shahi has suffered serious injury and was detained and kicked by the police. It has further taken note of the fact that at least five more journalist were targeted specially photographers and TV journalists at the same public protest meeting.
The DUJ president, S.K. Pande and general secretary, Javed Faridi, in a joint statement today, called upon the Royal Nepalese Government to ensure a risk insurance cover for journalists and put an end to press bashing in a variety of shapes and guises.
The DUJ at an emergency General Body meeting on August 30, 2005 wore black badges and protested against the attacks on the press in Nepal and some parts of India. It has further started a mass signature campaign of solidarity with the Nepalese journalists which will be handed over to the Nepalese embassy in Delhi, the Indian government and the Indian International Federation of Journalists and friendly media groups next week.
It may be recalled that the DUJ had held a demonstration outside the Nepal Embassy in Delhi just three days after the King imposed censorship in Nepal.
